Medical Insurance vs Vision Care Plan Explained

What is a vision care plan, and how is it different from medical insurance?

A vision care plan is different from your health insurance policy. A vision care plan provides a wellness benefit for healthy eye exams, which includes routine eye care, prescription eyewear and contact lenses, and other vision services at a reduced cost. Medical health insurance covers (possibly with copay or deductible) eye exams and imaging due to eye disease (diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc..) or injury.

What does a vision care plan cover?

Most vision care plan plans normally include the following benefits:

  • Annual routine Exam
  • Eyeglass Frame
  • Eyeglass lenses
  • Contact lens evaluation
  • Contact lenses

Check with your plan to see if your benefits cover you once every year or once every two years. Most of the vision care plans cover these benefits with a copay or at a discounted rate.

What does my vision care plan NOT cover?

Vision plans do not typically cover any part of an eye exam considered “medical”. For example, a vision care plan will not typically cover vision loss, floaters, dry eyes, allergies, infections, eye disease, or eye exams for complications from diabetes.
